ePBI-P
Quick and easy assessment of
therapy benefit
What is the ePBI-P?
The ePBI-P is an instrument for patients with chronic itching (pruritus) and their physicians. It is based on the Patient Benefit Index-Pruritus (PBI-P) and is used to record patient-relevant goals and the individual benefit of pruritus treatment to evaluate the progress of goal achievement over time. It thus provides a valuable basis for joint decision-making by physicians and patients, as well as quality assurance in treatment. The ePBI-P is available as a mobile application for Android and iOS devices and as a web-based online tool.

How to use the ePBI-P
At the start of treatment, the patient completes the Patient Needs Questionnaire (PNQ), which consists of 27 questions. On a 5-point scale from “not at all” to “very”, the patient rates how important the respective goals are to them or indicates whether they do not apply to them. After the start of treatment, the Patient Benefit Questionnaire (PBQ) follows, also with 27 questions. Here, the patient indicates on a 5-point scale to what extent the treatment has contributed to the achievement of their previously defined goals, or whether individual aspects did not apply to them. Finally, the overall benefit of the therapy is calculated from the answers given in both questionnaires.
The index range is between 0 (no patient relevant benefit) and 4 (maximum patient relevant benefit).
Below is an example of the PBI calculation process in four steps.
1) Importance of treatment goals
With the help of the following questions, we’d like to know how important the below mentioned goals are to you personally in the current treatment.
For each of the following statements, please mark how important this treatment goal is to you. If a statement does not apply to you, e.g. because you do not have pain, please mark “does not apply to me“.
2) Treatment benefits
When the treatment began, you indicated in a questionnaire how important various goals were in the treatment of your skin disease.
Please mark each of the following statements according to the extent to which those treatment goals were achieved, indicating if the treatment has benefited you. If a statement did not apply to you, for example because you did not experience any pain, please mark "did not apply to me".

About Patient Reported Outcomes
“A PRO is any report of the status of a patient’s health condition that comes directly from the patient, without interpretation of the patient’s response by a clinician or anyone else.”
“Use of a PRO instrument is advised when measuring a concept best known by the patient or best measured from the patient perspective. […] PRO instrument adequacy depends on its role and relationships with other clinical trial endpoints as depicted in the endpoint model.”
